Obwohl er überwiegend für seine drakonischen Religionsgesetze bekannt ist, war Zara Yaqob dennoch ein praktisch veranlagtes Staatsoberhaupt und es gelang ihm, während der gesamten Dauer seiner Herrschaft äthiopische Interessen vor äußerem Einfluss zu schützen. Mehrere seiner fortschrittlichen Schriften über Religion, darunter die Mashafa Berha und die Mashafa Milad, sind bis heute erhalten geblieben.
